Astromantic Report - The Northern Marches
The Northern Marches
The Northern Marches was the designation given by the Rogue Trader de Winter to a swath of relatively calm and clear space immediately south of the starless depths of the Ophidian Gulf. It was reported to be a rich region with upwards of twenty planetary systems of some note, as well as countless lesser ones, mostly confined to the corward reaches of the region. By the year 981.M30 it was recorded that three major factions held dominion over the Northern Marches, at that time tied together in an uneasy alliance known as the Pact of the Prasada. Far spinward ruled the Technarchs from their spire-cities in Kovhir, their cold, distant decrees reaching as far as the frontier of Zhe’mei. Bordering them lay the expanding realm of the Devaraj, union of a hundred worlds. The realm first encountered by the Expeditionary Fleet was in truth but an arm of a far larger realm hailing from deeper within the Constellation, their presence in the Marches centred upon the Shrine World of Katch. Finally, in the trailing reaches of the Marches lay the remnants of the Yilderin dynasty within the Wolf’s Cradle, locked in a bitter struggle with the advancing Orks of Ardbuttz da Uber-Anarkist.
Rimwards the Marches proved far more barren, dominated by the lashing tendrils of the Phrygian Nebulae, forming into fantastic shapes of dancing stardust labelled as the Midean Mist by imperial astrographers. Amongst the Yilderin however it was known darkly as the Pallid Maid, who according to their legends guarded the gateway to the underworld. It had once been their frontier, though long lost to them. A tumultuous and perilous expanse of unstable space with but a few stable routes leading through the twisting nebulae, all ending in the Firtina system.
